What rights do I have if the airline rebooks my flight?

If the airline rebooks your flight, you have certain rights in the EU under the EU Passenger Rights Regulation (Regulation (EC) No 261/2004). These rights apply to flights departing in the EU or operated by an EU airline and landing in the EU. Here are your rights in the event of a rebooking:

  1. Information about the rebooking:

the airline must inform you about the rebooking in good time. The exact definition of “in good time” depends on the time of the rebooking:

  • More than 14 days before: if the airline informs you more than 14 days before the departure date, you are not entitled to compensation.
  • 7 to 14 days before: If you are informed 7 to 14 days before the departure date and the replacement flight does not depart within 2 hours before the scheduled departure time or arrives no less than 4 hours later than the scheduled arrival time, you are entitled to compensation.
  • Less than 7 days before: If you are informed less than 7 days before the departure date and the replacement flight does not depart within 1 hour before the scheduled departure time or arrives no less than 2 hours later than the scheduled arrival time, you are entitled to compensation.

  1. right to a replacement flight or refund: If your flight is rebooked, you                                      can either:
  • accept the replacement flight, or
  • Request a refund of the ticket price.

  1. obligation to provide assistance: The airline is obliged to provide you                               with reasonable assistance, in particular through

  • Meals and refreshments, depending on the waiting time,
  • Accommodation, if an overnight stay is required,
  • transportation to the accommodation if an overnight stay is required
  • communication facilities, such as telephone calls or e-mails.

  1. compensation: If you were not informed in good time, you are entitled                               to compensation, depending on the flight distance:

  • € 250 for flights up to 1,500 km,
  • € 400 for flights within the EU over 1,500 km and for flights between          1,500 and 3,500 km,
  • € 600 for flights over 3,500 km.

The compensation can be reduced by 50% if you are offered a replacement flight that arrives within a certain period of time (e.g. 2 hours for flights up to 1,500 km).

  1. no compensation in exceptional circumstances:

The airline does not have to pay compensation if the rebooking is due to extraordinary circumstances beyond its control, such as extreme weather conditions, political instability, third party strikes, or security risks.

Your claims for rebooking depend on when you were informed of the flight rebooking
